core technology & therapeutic focus
Sequana Medical's core technology is a fully implantable, battery powered pump that can be charged through the skin. It has been specifically engineered to provide robust, dependable and safe fluid transport in a fully implanted setting. This core technology is based on a unique combination of pump systems, pressure sensing capabilities, wireless charging, communications solutions and software design.
Our pump technology is based on a custom gear and micro-motor system engineered to work in the challenging biological setting of ascites. Our catheters are designed for efficient collection and transport of fluids within the body. The fluid transport system moves fluid throughout the day according to physician-set parameters with additional guidance from pressure sensors, which monitor fluid levels within the respective cavities. Wireless programming and recharging systems enhance patient comfort and quality of life, and allow for ongoing adaptation of the system to individual patient needs.
The therapeutic focus of Sequana Medical's fluid transport technology is the removal of chronic fluids that collect or form within a distinct body cavity outside of the vasculature.
Sequana Medical's first clinical target is on removing ascites, an excess fluid that collects in the abdominal cavity of patients with advanced liver disease, certain types of cancers and congestive heart failure. When ascites can no longer be managed with medical therapy, redirecting the excess fluid to another body cavity such as the bladder can relieve many of the issues associated with excess fluid accumulation and can reduce the need for repeated invasive intervention.
Sequana Medical is evaluating a number of future clinical applications of the technology, including an application for improved management of pleural effusions, an excess fluid that collects in the space around the lungs.
The ALFApump® System
The Automated Low-Flow Ascites Pump (ALFApump®) System is a fully implantable battery powered pump system that removes ascites as it forms by transferring it to the bladder where it is eliminated through normal urination.
Key features include:
- Automated and continuous removal of ascites
- Adaptable settings to fit individual patient needs
- Wirelessly programmable by the physician
- Robust – Engineered to pump ascites
- Rechargeable – Moves 5 liters per charge
Implantation is minimally invasive:
- 45 minute procedure
- Patient under local or general anesthesia
- 1 to 2 days hospital stay
Primary system components:
ALFApump®

A subcutaneously implanted battery powered pump that can be charged through the skin. The ALFApump® pumps ascites according to a programmed schedule set by the physician and utilizes sensors that constantly monitor pressure in the peritoneal cavity and bladder to ensure optimal fluid management.
Bladder & Peritoneal Catheters

Catheters collect ascites from the peritoneal cavity and, via the ALFApump®, transport excess ascites into the bladder where it is eliminated from the body through normal urination.
Smart Charger & Docking Station

A hand-held charger charges the ALFApump® through the skin and collects all pump activity which can be transferred to the physician during follow-up visits.
ALFApump® Programmer

Communication software allows physicians to download pump data and change settings according to patient needs.
